The old stairs leading to this basement were literally falling apart, it was pretty scary. We tore it all down and that's when I realized that the bricks in this old house, built in 1915, are crumbling and cannot support the new stairs. And so, instead of relying on the old bricks for support, we poured a concrete slab and created a “free standing” staircase. These stairs were later covered with a carpet.
